Phoenix Industries, a plastics products maker in Sri Lanka has laid the foundation stone for a new LKR350m ($3m) plant in Horana, which will supply the packaging needs of the fast moving consumer goods company Unilever's Sri Lanka unit.

Phoenix Industries managing director Aslam Omar said the company's focus will be to understand customer needs and to provide cost effective polymer based packaging solutions to Unilever.

"Our aim is to grow along with the customer and to become the most preferred plastic packaging solutions provider in the coming years," Omar added.

The plant located on a seven-acre plot, is set to expand into new polymer based packaging using tubes and films and is expected to be operational by the end of 2012. It will be developed to meet all required quality compliance to manufacture personal care and food packaging products.

Unilever's current product portfolio will be expanded by Phoenix, which plans to introduce new technologies to create value addition for all the packaging products of Unilever.

Phoenix, which already supplies packaging for Unilever's Pears, Ponds, Vaseline, Lux, Knorr, Domex, Signal, Astra and Flora brands has its current facilities in Makandura. The firm makes PET bottles, toothbrushes, packing for personal care and lubricant products among others.
