WikiCell Designs in the US has landed a $10m Series-A financing co-led by Flagship Ventures and Polaris Venture Partners in a bid to make food and beverage packaging that will be edible.

WikiCell Designs CEO and co-founder Robert Connelly said the company offers the consumer a way to reducing their plastic and paper footprint while enjoying a better eating experience.

"By replacing plastic and other forms of packaging with delicious natural edible packaging, Wikicell can have a profound impact on the world," Connelly said.

The technology is applicable to food and beverages and the company proposes to market products direct to consumer and in retail settings, with its own branded products and with partner brands.

WikiCell Designs was created to turn food and beverage packaging from plastic toward all-natural forms, protecting products and doing away with the need for protective materials that are dangerous to human health and the environment.

Flagship Ventures, based in Massachusetts, manages over $900m in capital, while Polaris Venture Partners is a partnership of investors, operating executives and entrepreneurs.
